Opus Amsterdam, breeding ground op Westerdok 608
Opus Amsterdam is a privately run concert studio/event and office space. There are rehearsals of chamber and jazz music and violin lessons on Saturdays. And is also used for events outside the regular program, such as private concerts or company parties with own or internal catering. If you are looking for a place to celebrate a birthday with live music or a place for a fundraising concert, please feel free to send us an email with your request: info@opusamsterdam.com.
The function of concert studio is the most well-known. On the days of the concerts, the studio usually organizes a dress rehearsal of the performing musicians around 6:00 p.m. and then opens its doors at 7:30 p.m. or when the first guests arrive. When you visit us for a concert, you can count on a glass of wine, tea or coffee, some snacks and an evening full of music.
The guest musicians are usually young professionals and occasionally more experienced musicians come to present their projects. Each of these musicians brings a different repertoire of compositions, so you can find everything from premieres of contemporary pieces to the lofty compositions of baroque to lively folk and pop music.
Due to the small space of Opus, the concerts take place in an intimate and quiet atmosphere with the possibility of talking to the musicians after each concert. Our guests are usually neighbours and friends of artists, but also people from all over the city and sometimes travellers.
Everyone is welcome, our main goal is to meet the neighbourhood we live in — hopefully we will build a space where the neighbourhood and the city can meet in music and conversation.
A new activity of Opus is the exhibition of visual art, with the first exhibition being a jazz portrait called “Meditations”, by artist Asaf Lewkowitz. The portraits depict artists whose life’s work has had a profound impact on the world of music, such as Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and Bill Evans. Most photos are for sale. The exhibition can be visited free of charge just before the concerts. If anyone wants to see it at another time, write us an email.
Most of the time, the studio is closed to the public, but when there’s no rehearsal, recording, or meeting going on, we’re happy to open the door to anyone who knocks on the door – whether it’s to say hello or ask about the next concert.
